THANKS!

September 15th, 2005 at 07:25 pm

Thank you for the stars! Can someone explain them to me??? Sorry if this is a dumb question!

Last night I went to register with a friend for her baby shower. Its amazing all the NEW baby stuff out there, and mine is only 8 months old! Anyways I spent $5.40 on a toy for the little guy for being so good (and to keep him busy) during the whole excursion! I'm upset that I used cash instead of a gift cert that I've been toting along with me for months- oh well next time!

Tonight I am preparing for my Amercian Cancer training scheduled for tomorrow. I need to print up some materials- shouldn't take too long. Then I think I'll dive into a James Patterson novel I picked up last week - I got 2 for 7.98 (total)- they are hardcover and thought it was a reasonable price. I just finished The Lake House - all I can say is "interesting". This should keep me busy enough to keep this a no spend day. Tomorrow I will most likely have to stop for gas to fill up the family SUV- not looking forward to it...But this should be my only purchase.

Broke my own rule...

September 13th, 2005 at 09:16 pm

I stopped at Target on the way home yesterday to pick up some storage containers and laundry stuff. I do a load everyday so I needed to stop or else I would have to do all the laundry over the weekend which is not fun...Listen to me - I'm making excuses... $36.26 (used discounted gift certs.)

Anyway, I used the storage bins to organize my pre-baby clothes - just in case I ever squeeze back into them. My exercise room's closet is now clean with 4 bins of babyclothes, maternity clothes and pre-materity clothes, then all the baby items which the little guy no longer uses, but I'm keeping just incase we get blessed with another bundle of joy.

I also recieved a $100 rebate that I can use towards my cable bill - not bad for filling out some paperwork- I completely forgot about this since I completed it in Feb.

We made our decision...

September 12th, 2005 at 04:08 pm

We will be moving forward with the landscaping in the backyard. The next door neighbor’s kid, even after speaking with the parents, still insists crossing the property line, and now is throwing stuff at our dogs, and likes to watch them get zapped by the electric fence. So in order to protect my dogs and the kid we are dipping into savings to get it installed next week. I hope it works! The decision will put us about a month behind in paying off the CC that was scheduled for payment in mid Sept.

This week’s errand day was a success. I updated my fall wardrobe for $167.94 total- 5 new work outfits and one weekend wear (sale & coupons). I went grocery shopping for the month $166.77. I planned a month of dinners for the baby and us and should only have to stop to pick up lunchmeat, fruit, bread and milk. And purchased a gift for 32.35. The only place I didn’t get to was Target- I will just hold off until next week.

I spent the rest of my weekend getting caught up on housework. I was only gone for 3 days last week, so I have no idea how I fell so far behind! Did 6 loads of laundry, 2 loads of dishes, cleaned the main and upper levels (dusting, vacuuming, etc) and cleaned out my side of the closet with my pre-baby clothes.

Tonight I have my first night of bowling (if I make it – very sleepy today) - $60.00 for the month, then home to chopped veggies and fruit for baby food!

Update...

September 9th, 2005 at 08:49 pm

I returned from my business trip late last night - so no money spent while I was gone except for 19.13 on souvenirs. Today I spent 5.85 on lunch- I didn't have time to make something last night or this morning...

My first errand day (last Sat) was exhausting! I'm not a shopper, but I made it and got tons accomplished! I spent 134.26 on gifts/wrapping paper/household items/suitcase and some pictures I didn't really need- but they look great! I also spent 87.56 at Target for formula that was on sale plus coupons, and 2 more gifts- I purchased using discounted gift cards. This week I only need to do some grocery shopping- shouldn't be more than $150.00 (crossing my fingers!) Thats all I got for now!

Planning for my first Errand day...

September 3rd, 2005 at 04:08 am

Saturday- which is tagged errand day- is going to be quite busy. My mom and I will be heading to the dollar store for some more baby food containers (looking to make 4 weeks worth at a time) and b-day wrapping paper and cards, Bed bath and beyond- I have a $50.00 gift cert, which I plan to use to purchase a wedding gift and maybe something for the hosue, then to target to purchase a b-day gift and a suit case with wheels since I leave on a business trip on Tuesday. I'm hoping it won't be too expensive. I have asked DH to stop at Home Depot for light bulbs, a dryer connection piece and wasp spray (they are horrible this year!)

Today I spent $4.42 for coffe and a snack. I needed an afternoon pick me up!

Walked for only 15 minutes

Sept. Goals

September 1st, 2005 at 10:53 pm

I’m thankful September is here! And I’m glad August is behind me – I spent way too much money! New month- new start! Here are my Sept goals:

Follow my new game plan outline in my previous post
Keep track of spending – attempted in Aug- failed miserably!!!
Pay off Bank One by mid-Sept- On Track
Up my 401k deductions back to 10% by Oct, currently at 5%- Upped to 7% in Aug
Stash $1500 into our emergency fund by end of year.- Sent $500, plan to send another $500 in Sept.
Finish Xmas shopping – about 80% complete

Besides these $$ goals, I am working on my “health Plan” – my goals are to continue to walk every weeknight with my little guy. Keep the veggies & fruit in the house so I continue to eat better. I am learning to cook healthier meals. We have agreed to eat a home cooked meals at least 6 times a week- It would have been 7 but I need my pizza fix…DH & I will be splitting the cooking responsibility- so it should be easier to eat in.

New Game Plan!

August 30th, 2005 at 05:36 pm

The last two nights I worked on updating quicken and the debt repayments plan. I went to Discover Card to check my balance and see if there was anything I had forgotten to input into quicken when I pushed on “last 12months of statement” OMG – what an eye opener – it showed me the total spent on the card over the last 12 months. I can’t believe it!!! After I picked myself off the floor… I have realized that things need to change and fast!

My game plan: Keep lists of items running low and needed gifts, so I don’t run out while I am waiting for errand day. Errand day is been tagged for Saturday only- No other purchases other than purchasing discounted gift cards or using my weekly allowance of $60 cash– this needs to cover wkly bowling fee, gas and any “milk/bread” instances. Continue with menu planning and grocery lists. Leave DH at home when shopping- this alone will save a ton $$! Pay only using debit card. I know these seem like no brainers – apparently I’m a little slow…I thought I was doing OK- but that number from Discover showed me that I am waaayyyy off!

TGIF

August 26th, 2005 at 07:00 pm

I can't wait to get out of here! Its been so hectic around this place, deadlines shortened, extra stuff tossed at me, WHAT a week!!

Yesterday I broke down and bought a candy bar - I desperately needed sugar!!-$0.75. After work I went home and straightened up a bit before the girls got there for our scrap booking night. We are putting together a memory book for a friend who just got married. It turned out great - we only have a few more pages to do...

Tonight I’m going home spend some time with the little one, then need to update quicken – I’ve fallen behind. Plus I want to rework my debt repayment plan. DH is in construction, so he’s off work for about 3 months. Its time to start saving that extra $$ for our “just in case” cushion. Should be a no spend day and an overall low spend weekend!

Have a good one!

Finally some clarity on my job…

August 25th, 2005 at 03:31 pm

Met with my SVP. Still don’t know whom I will directly report to (it doesn’t matter much anyways), but my job will not change much. Looks like I will be getting back into project management, while I continue to do the product management for at least the next 18-24 months until additional help is brought in. Either way I will stay busy and learn lots…

Last night I went to Stride Rite to get my little guy “good” shoes since he is starting to walk. I can’t believe the prices-($48.58 for shoes and polish)! Or that they are still around, I remember going there when I was little. Then I stopped and splurged for a new outfit and accessories to the tune of $75.60. Its cute, good quality and I will get a lot of wear out of the shirt – it will go with anything. Spent more then I was expecting--today I’ll try to get back on track, though I am REALLY craving some coffee!

Still no word...

August 23rd, 2005 at 06:37 pm

On how the changes at work with affect me - my SVP rescheduled for tomorrow. I don't think I need to be concerned with losing my job, it just I have no idea if my role is changing, and if I have any room for movement...Guess these questions will have to wait until tomorrow.

Spent $48.05 on gas this morning to fill up the SUV. We don't use it but on the weekends and when we have to take our little one some place so I had sticker shock at the pump this morning. I fill up my car once every 2 weeks and it only costs me $25 or so and thats on the high end...Looks like we may curb our driving on the weekends even more if gas prices keep going up!

Last night ran some errands; Home depot for furnace filters - used discounted gift certs and $11.14, Petco for flea/tick prevention to the sum of $38.15. Paid for the all natural stuff, but if anyone knows homemade solutions for fleas, I would love to hear them...We found two fleas in the house over the last couple of weeks. Dogs and cats seem to be free of them (use frontline monthly) so I am unsure how they have gotten into our home... Its only two- maybe Im making a bigger deal than I should...Then I stopped at Michaels to use by 40% coupon and got 3 kids X-mas gifts for $10.57. tonight I have dinner with the girls, Im expecting to spend maybe $10 or so.

Changes at work

August 22nd, 2005 at 03:56 pm

I have been so busy with all the changes at work I haven’t been able to keep up with my journaling. They've been keeping me so busy I have no problem hanging on to my cash! So far this month I have put $1200.00 towards credit debt, $500.00 into my emergency account, and paid an extra $350.00 to my car loan. I’m still on target to pay the bank one CC by mid Sept.

DH & I are looking at having our back yard professionally landscaped, to a tune of $2500.00-Our neighbors' kids keep playing in our yard, our dogs are friendly but they are large and clumsy, I don't want anything to happen-Unfortunaltely we can't put up a fence...Not sure if we want to dig this much into savings...We will consider this once I get a comfort level with all the changes that have taken place at work. I meet with my SVP today.

This weekend we took a nice short trip to our old town, had dinner with friends, went swimming at the hotel, and then visited the local art fest. We took $200.00 for the weekend and came home with some $$$- so not an overly expensive weekend.

This week is going to be busy, Dr. appt tonight, dinner with the girls tomorrow, Thursday is scrap booking night at our house, then sat & Sun we have BBQs to go to…Hopefully a fairly inexpensive week.

I love deals!

August 17th, 2005 at 04:18 pm

Today was suppose to be a No spend day but I couldn't resist. I went to the Joann Fabrics website to look for Wilton cake decorating books. (I took the first class thru Michaels- it was fun- just hard to get there- thought I could just purchase the books and self learn.) While I was on the website a 50% coupon came up - so I decided to purchase the cookie master regular $39.00 and got it for $19.99!!

Tonight I need to return an aquarium stand and the $$ I get back should cover the dog/cat & bird food. So no spending beyond the $20.00.

Weekend recap...

August 16th, 2005 at 08:49 pm

Saturday was another no spend day - DH didn't have to work so we stayed homed relaxed and did some small projects around the house. Sunday - well we did some errands after going to the locate barnyard petting zoo. The zoo cost ~$10.00 for the three of us (this included food to feed the animals), then off to target for groceries, personals and household items, with a total cost of $227.79 OUCH!!! Paid with cash, no cc debt.

Monday was no spend and Tuesday only .37 cents so far for a stamp. close enough to a no spend day...

I put $500.00 towards my emergency fund this week, and still on target for paying off my Bank one by Mid Sept - cc reduced by $600.00

Looking forward to the weekend...

August 12th, 2005 at 10:14 pm

Its Friday- hooray! It seems as if time is standing still here at work- I think I’m a little too excited for this weekend. We have nothing planned, nowhere to be… It’s a nice change! So we were going to focus on getting some things done around the house. We were planning on working on our backyard garden, but it looks like Mother Nature will not be having any of that! Change of plans! Saturday while DH is working I am planning on running all the errands since I planned our menus for next week and put together our grocery and errand list. Stop at the bank to close my son’s savings account and move the $$ to his new ING account I opened the other night. After all my errands, I’ll be heading home to do some baking and start dinner. Then relax and spend time together as a family. My poor DH has been working so late that he hasn’t seen our son awake in the last 3 nights!

Sunday I am going to get my little guys old clothing together to drop off at Once upon a child- I guess they pay you at the time of drop off for the items they will accept. Not sure what to expect, but hopefully I’ll get some $$$. I also want to store some of those bigger baby items in the attic just in case we are blessed with another little one.

This week has been good – I had 4 no spend days! My goal for next week is to have 5…

Lazy Evening/Lazy Day

August 11th, 2005 at 03:06 pm

I sure it’s the weather, but last night was a lazy one. I didn’t make it to the grocery store or any of the other “to dos” I wanted to get started on. I cleaned the kitchen, filed some paperwork, watered the plants, put some clothes away and relaxed. Neither DH nor I felt like cooking so he picked up (his treat) Chinese food. And I am so proud of him! He usually spends money on tons of food and most of it goes to waste – last night he brought home only what we could eat. No wasted money/ no wasted food!

The laziness from last night still lingers this AM – so its not going to be a very productive day! Going to focus on researching prices for some furniture for the basement, and do some planning for a new planting bed in our backyard. Should be a cheap day!

Can’t believe its already Wednesday!

August 10th, 2005 at 05:33 pm

This past weekend went took a small road trip to our family reunion held in Southern Il. It was hot, but we had great company and good food! It was great to see everyone! DH and I spent our way home on Sunday stopping at antique shops- I found some old coins for very cheap, which I picked up. Even with the additional shopping I remained under budget for the trip! I did some research on the coins on Monday and was very happy with my decision to purchase!

I am trying to build my coin collection once again. I had a great collection that I had started when I was younger, however, a theft by a (so called) friend had taken all except for some coins that didn’t have much value… So I am collecting once again… I thought it would be a great way for my little guy to learn about history!

Also, I’ve been trying to stay busy at home by finishing up some “to dos” -which helps keep me away from stores and the money in the bank …My goals for the week are to finish setting up our old aquarium. I had given it away and its come back and been sitting in our basement with all supplies for over a year now…I guess its time! It won’t cost anything but the water to fill it and fish. I also need to update our little guy’s scrapbook for the last two months, and our home scrapbook with the new garden pictures… This weekend I would like to start on a home inventory.

Finances:
Monday and Tuesday were both no spend days! Woo Hoo!
Wednesday – well that’s a different story- $4.96 on B-fast & coffee, $176 on gift cards (x-mas & bday gifts), and have some minor grocery shopping to do tonight…

Amazing!

August 4th, 2005 at 06:02 pm

Since I have my financial house in order, my life has become so much more! It may sound weird, but before, when I was unsure how much cc debit we had, just pay as much as we could on all CCs- my life (I suppose) was unorganized... I don’t know if I was scared, or maybe depressed or nervous on having debt. Not sure, but somehow that affected my motivation – don’t quite understand it… Now with a plan I am focusing on a debt then tackling the next- and I can see the debit getting smaller and my savings growing! Freedom is almost here.

I have also put all my paperwork in order (had to get organized to understand my debt), which lead to all sorts of organizing…I have grocery lists with coupons attached, so my pantry and fridge is always full (Unheard of before!). I’ve put together routines for my mornings and evenings. It’s amazing how much free time I have and how much energy/motivation I have! I am able to spend at least 2.5 hours after work with my little guy without thinking about anything but our playtime. After he goes to bed I make dinner for DH & I and straighten up the house. I have now implemented an exercise/walking routine- my motivation to get fit again came from retire@50- Thanks! I have time for my hobbies; scrap booking, baking, floral arrangements (Made a couple of wreaths for the front door this past weekend) and I updated my sons website (free at Babiesonline.com). I have decided to volunteer my time again and rejoined the American Cancer Society Task force for Daffodil Days. Some folks at work have even noticed how “together” I am now (I wonder just how bad I got?). I had thought my inability to get things done and no motivation was due to being so tired from being a new mom, but it seems that our financial situation played a big role, as well! Or maybe I just lost it? Who knows! But life is good! ;-)

Looking forward to Aug!

August 2nd, 2005 at 03:47 pm

This is my first full month of tracking

I started the month off the right way-Aug 1st was my first true no spend day! Woo Hoo!

Aug 2nd is a different story. I order my 2-3 month supply of diapers ~$55.00, Gas =$33.88, and I have to stop at the dry cleaners on the way home= $37.00.

This last weekend was busy and expensive, but it felt good not to put anything on the CCs. We are very excited that our debt, spending is decreasing and our savings is increasing. But as always, when you feel you are on the right track, something tries to derail you! I got a call from a collection dept. yesterday stating my EX didn’t pay for his car for the last 2 months and that its going to hit our credit by the end of this week. Unfortunately I am co-owner and will be responsible for the payment. My EX swears that he paid the bills, but I'm believing the finance co. I keep covering the missed payments (So far only 2 - but it seems to be getting worse!) so I don’t get marks on my credit, and he keeps promising to pay me back! I warned him that if he missed another payment that I was picking the car up (Three strikes your out!) So…it looks like I’m getting ANOTHER car and another payment. Grrrrrrrrrr! On the bright side, I'm looking forward to the fun of my first repo job! ;-)

It's Friday!!!!

July 29th, 2005 at 08:22 pm

I didn't think Friday would ever get here!!!

Last night was a lazy night - I missed class to stay home with my little one. He was in such a good mood, and I felt that I haven't spent enough qualitity time with him, so we played unitl about 7:45 when we both crashed...He actually was still sleeping when I left this morning!

Tonight looks like more of the same except that I have some errands to run, but I will wait for him to go to bed first--So another NO no spend day for me...I broke down yesterday and splurged on more coffee for me and a friend- next week coffee will be free for me! I was soooo close to my first no spend day- at least since I signed up (I'm sure I had to have a couple at some point in the past!)

Weekly spending- Only $$$ spent on extras and food.
Mon- $178.26 Groceries including butcher
Tues-$ 51.33 gifts and lunch out
Wed-$3.05 Coffee
Thur-$41.02 Gas & Coffee
Fri- Estimated at $35 for gifts.

Total for the week - 308.66 Hopefully this will decrease since I usually don't have some many parties going on!!!

cc debit reduction this week = -$350.00

Already looking forward to this weekend...

July 28th, 2005 at 07:38 pm

Even though its going to be a busy one! tonight I have class, tomorrow I have to pick up some gifts after work & wrap, then Sat. I have a bridal shower, annual summer party (which DH is cooking at) and then a wedding, Sun a birthday party...AND I'm already exhausted! I'm hoping to get some time to myself too- doubt it though!

Financially: Yestday was close to a no spend day - only $3.05 for coffee! Today I spent $36.02 on gas. Also, I went into our accounts and moved the left over $$$ (our small wkly cushion for the "just in cases"-trying not to touch our savings!) to the CC debit. Put $300 to Discover and $50 to Visa. Tomorrow is payday- so I will be paying more bills then...

Its weird, but since I pulled my head out of the sand and figured out how much we owed and started watching where our money was going, I have enjoyed watching our debt decrease and our savings increase. Who knew money mgmt could be so fun!

Slow moving today!

July 27th, 2005 at 03:40 pm

The Bridal shower was a blast. We had plenty of leftovers, everyone got to take home goodies...I even won a beautiful picture frame! My little one was up until 8:40 with excitement from all the visitors...That translates into a restless night for him and me...I’m so tired I was falling asleep at my desk so I splurged on a coffee drink= $3.05. Other than that this should be a no spend day. We have our company picnic so lunch is covered, then heading home to play with my little one, a hot bath, then to bed! I’m so looking forward to that!!!

Moving right along...

July 26th, 2005 at 06:45 pm

With help from my mom, I finished my laundry, did another load of dishes, dusted and cleaned all remaining rooms, got the groceries, baked the cake and made the baby food (all except cereal- which I will do on Wed.) The veggie & cheese trays are ready to go, and the mini-meatballs are cooking in the crockpot as I type.
During my lunch today I ran to Target to pick up the bridal shower gifts- not too bad on $$$ but since I was out I bought lunch. I'm ready for the party tonight, all I have to do is finish decorating the cake and enjoy the company.

Financially:
Groceries - $35 over budget
Target - 2 Gifts - $45.76
Lunch - $5.57

And with paying cash for everything this week(and its only Tuesday) I already have $10 in singles, which gets put into my son's savings account.

Back from Vacation...

July 25th, 2005 at 05:02 pm

My 5-day trip was fun, and I stayed within budget! I came home early yesterday trying to get a jump on this week. It’s going to be a busy one. I'm having a bridal shower at my home on Tuesday night for a friend at work. About 12-15 people so I was not too happy when I got home to a not so clean house. Last night I cleaned the basement, pet’s room, Master bedroom, and kitchen counters. 1 load of dishes, 3 loads of laundry. DH hand washed all the hardwood floors. Tonight, after the grocery shopping, I will do the prep work on the veggie/fruit & cheese trays, bake the cake and print out the tags for the favors. (I already made the chocolate hearts for the favors). I hope to make two weeks of baby food, but not sure if I will have enough time – we’ll have to see!

Still have 2 more loads of laundry, 3 more rooms to dust and the bathrooms to clean...My mom, who babysits for us, was kind enough to do my ironing- so one thing to check off my to do list (it is my most hated task!)

Financial Update:
Today - paid utilities for next month- $309.90 / Medical bills- $360.75 / Car Insurance -$85
Need to purchase 3 gifts for this week (2 bridal shower/ 1 wedding)
Need to grocery shop for the next 2 weeks ~ 140.00 (includes $70.00 spent at butcher yesterday)
Looks like an expensive week!

THANK YOU!

July 19th, 2005 at 03:04 pm

Thank you! Thank you! for your suggestions on how to deal with my DH wastefulness. We split everything, and I do take more money if bills go up due to him... After thinking about things I decided to approach this differently --I explained how wasteful he was and that if he was to cut back the money saved would be money he could put into a savings account for his dream- opening his own construction company! I've never seen him so excited- So far he has turned the temp up on the AC, quickly hand-watered the back yard and only in the bad spots- 15 minutes or so. Took about a 3 min shower, AND made his lunch this morning - I guess there is a first time for everything. I may have created a monster- We'll see!

I'm hoping for a no spend day today- so far so good- brought my lunch and my water bottle- went for the free coffee and hot cocoa mix instead of a mocha from the coffee joint downstairs.

Weekly spending
Mon - 71.75 Supertarget for food, formula and bathing suit (on sale)
Tues - No Spend?
Wed - Sun - Annual Girls trip- completely budgeted for- should have no problem staying within budget, may even come home with some extra $$$.

I just don't know what to do!!!

July 18th, 2005 at 03:35 pm

My DH- Dear Honey in our case (not married) is driving me crazy...I can't seem to get him to understand that air conditioning and water are expensive when used excessively! I try to keep the house temp around 76 (its been in the 90s around here), and our bedroom has a fan that’s kept on all night and he sneaks to the thermostat and changes it to 72/73 every night. While he cools down the house, he is outside watering the lawn for HOURS! Yesterday I was out visiting with some friends, when I left he started watering, I got home 4 hours later and he was still watering….About 3 hours later, after getting pretty mad and starting to fight, he finally turned it off. That was after the 5 hours the night before…I am dreading our water bill.

He just doesn’t seem to get it. I feel like the world’s biggest nag. I’m always on his case about his wastefulness…He leaves doors open while the air is on (not to mention the amount of bugs that get in the house)…He starts the shower and walks away for 10-15 minutes- he says its to let the water get hot, even though it takes all of 30 seconds in this house! Turns on multiple TVs and leaves the house…I hate when he attempts to help clean, he uses excessive amounts of soap in the laundry, dish water, and any sprays….

I just can’t figure out what to do to make him think about the money he is wasting…I tried having him do the bills, nothing got paid, I printed out pretty spreadsheets, didn’t work. I’m at my end of my rope! Anyone have any thoughts?

Feelin' Good

July 15th, 2005 at 03:03 pm

A little nervous....

July 14th, 2005 at 10:41 pm

with this being my first journal post and all. I really enjoy reading everyone's post and encouragement. The journaling seems to helps others, and I am hopeful this will keep me on track as well!

I have never been in debt before and am looking forward to getting rid of it ASAP!!! Its very stressful and time consuming.

We had fallen into the debt trap after we purchased our new home. It was larger than the last, so that means more furniture, landscaping, etc. And my other half doesn't like to wait, he has to have it NOW...My first step was to show him the amount of debt, and explain that we now have to wait to purchase his wants cuz I refuse to go any further!

I guess I'll start with my goals...
Short Term- 1-6 months
Get organized!
Pay off Credit Card #1 by end of July
Pay off Credit Card #2 by mid-sept
Up my 401k deductions back to 10% by Oct, currently at 5%
stash $1500 into our emergency fund by end of year.
